Local history contributions needed…….

Up The Swanee, being held at the Kendray Community Drop In,St Andrews Church Community Hall,73 Gerald Rd, Barnsley S70 3BH
Barnsley Heritage Connects are proud to announce a new heritage project exploring the hidden history of the much loved but sometimes maligned Swanee Pond in Kendray.
Some amazing facts have been discovered from great mansion houses, celestial events, pleasure boating, crimes, tragedies and even Mary queen of Scot’s armour! All showing that heritage happens everywhere around us.
At these events you will get chance to meet celebrated artist Richard Kitson, Bard of Barnsley Ian McMillan and talented composer Luke Carver-Goss (and Sue Stokes as the tea lady extraordinaire!). The whole project will climax with a very special musical performance on the Swanee this October.
There are more space on the second event so we are looking for more people to attend on the 28th but if you have some personal memories of Kendray we would really love it if you could make the 21st as we have the oral history society in attendance on this date recording stories for the future.
There will be a chance to get involved in live poetry, music and art as well as free refreshments, nibbles and cakes.
Please also share with your friends and networks if you know anyone who would like this - it’s going to be a good one.
 

New Groups

User-friendly IT Devices & Gadgets

Meeting weekly, Starting on Tuesday 26th September 2023 through to the 12th December 2023 from 10am to 12pm

at the Alder Close Community Centre, Mapplewell

This is a new group designed to help people get to grips with making their mobiles and portable IT devices behave the way they should … or at least to understand why they're not … and to do something about it.

Eating Out in Penistone

Eating Out In Penistone will meet at various venues in and around Penistone, starting week commencing 26th September 2023.

The Feminist Group

A discussion group where members put forward any issue they want to discuss, for example: The Glass Ceiling, Unconscious Sexism, Gender Identity, Sexism and Gender Bias, Reproductive Rights, Domestic Violence, Surnames, FGM, Rape Prosecutions, Abortion, Women in Sport, Women as Role Models ……… 

 

A similar u3a group run locally is open to men and some ‘liberated’ men’s ideas lead to very interesting debates. 


Get into the psychology of what we are, why we are like that and how we might change it.

 

Modern Jive for beginners

 Two left feet? No problem, come along to Modern Jive and we can sort it. No partner? No partner required, come along anyway.
We meet at Staincross Christian Fellowship in Mapplewell on Wednesdays 6pm to 8pm except for every second Wednesday of the month.

Photography

 The Bu3a Photography Group is ready to make a comeback. The objective is to help members improve their photography and enjoy their images
whether taken by mobile phone or camera. The choice is yours. Dates, time, location and structure of meetings is dependent on the collective decision of the group.
Indu Kumar (Development Officer) is taking names of interested members and will arrange a time for a first meeting to decide how best to go forward.
